October 10, 2025

New musical ready to conquer Broadway and the West End.
For the first time ever, the world-renowned group AQUA has given their approval for their music and story to be transformed into an original musical – AQUA THE MUSICAL. The show is produced by the Danish production company AHA Creations and will premiere in Copenhagen in 2028.
“Come on Barbie, let’s go party” – the iconic anthem is back. Aqua has brought their energy and unique colorful universe into the lives of millions of people. With hit song after hit delivered, the group has entertained audiences worldwide and defined an entire era of pop music.
Now Denmark’s biggest pop group is ready to take on a new adventure. This time in a completely new setting, with their history and music setting the scene for this grand international musical production.
The production company, AHA Creations, owns the global rights to the title for a minimum of 25 years. From the very beginning of this production, AHA Creations aims to create a musical with a strong international potential. With the title of AQUA THE MUSICAL and a world premiere at The Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, AHA Creations has their eyes set on some of the biggest musical
theatres in the world, from Broadway to the West End and from Hamburg to Toronto. The interest in AQUA THE MUSICAL has already crossed Danish borders with international stakeholders showing their enthusiasm towards the project.
“Aqua is one of the few Danish groups to have truly secured a place in world music history. With millions of albums sold, top rankings on international charts, and a legacy that still resonates today, they created a playful universe, tailor-made for musical theatre. That is why Aqua provides the perfect foundation for a new and international musical. With AQUA THE MUSICAL, we hold a unique opportunity to launch a Danish-produced musical onto the global stage,” states Martin Palme Skriver, Executive Director of AHA Creations.
AQUA THE MUSICAL is Aqua’s biggest venture yet when it comes to expanding their brand. The group is closely involved in the creative process behind the musical to ensure that their story is portrayed as authentically as possible.
Looking towards the new adventure, Aqua shares:
“We’ve had a wild ride, full of experiences that have never really been told before. Now, we’re incredibly excited to relive them as a musical, together with the rest of the world. We’re certain it will be both fun and moving, and at the same time a reminder of everything we’ve been through and how privileged we’ve been. If AHA Creations and the rest of the team manage to capture even a fraction of what it felt like, we can promise it will be entertaining – and something a little out of the ordinary.”

AQUA THE MUSICAL is developed in cooperation with Fredericia Musicalteater.

Aqua is re-writing the history of Danish musical theatre
With AHA Creations at the steering wheel, AQUA THE MUSICAL aims to be the first of its kind to export an ambitious and high-quality musical about the world-renowned brand, Aqua.
In 1997, Aqua released their debut album Aquarium, and their single Barbie Girl became a global sensation overnight, hitting number one in 14 countries and ranking top ten in many more. The world embraced both Barbie Girl and the debut album, which sold one million copies in just one week.
Following the success of Aquarium, the group released Aquarius in 2000, featuring hits like Cartoon Heroes and Around the World. In 2001, Aqua disbanded, but their music continued to live across radio and dance floors worldwide. In 2007 they reunited, and in 2011 they released the album Megalomania. Since then, Aqua has played major festivals and toured across the globe.
In 2023, Aqua experienced a worldwide revival when Barbie Girl was featured in the Oscar-winning film Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. A sample version of the track, Barbie World (with Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice), reached top ten in several countries – including the US and the UK and earned two Grammy nominations. Meanwhile, the original recording gained over 47 million
Spotify streams in just six months, today surpassing more than 600 million streams.
Today, Aqua still stands as one of Denmark’s most iconic music exports, known for turning ironic pop into a globally recognized phenomenon. Most recently, Aqua wrapped up their Canadian tour, once again proving their lasting relevance on the international music scene.
The concept behind AQUA THE MUSICAL
AHA Creations wants to tell the story of the greatest Danish pop group of all time, produced on a scale that has never before been seen in Danish musical theatre. The production will challenge not only the traditional format of stage-based musical storytelling but also push the boundaries of what is technically possible in a music-dramatic performance, without compromising the essence of the work:
the story in itself.
Aqua is reborn in a dramatic musical tale of dreams, ambition, success, and the challenges that come with it, carrying a clear message of believing in yourself and your ideas against all odds. Pop music may not be able to save the world, but it finds a way to have a place in our lives, whether it is the soundtrack to your first kiss, to that night you will never forget, and to the memories that never fade.
Award-winning production team
AHA Creations has put together some of Denmark’s most respected and talented people to bring this project to life. Director, Thomas Agerholm, and scenographer, Benjamin La Cour, are both forces to be reckoned with. When it comes to writing musical theatre history, no one fits the description better than these two creative minds, as proven by their great success within Danish musical productions.
Together, they created the hit Disney-musical The Hunchback of Notre Dame (2019), the newlywritten Seebach the Musical (2018) and The Last Ship (2025).
Claus Reenberg, Mads Æbeløe, and Nikolaj Tarp are the playwrights behind AQUA THE MUSICAL. The trio have previously worked together for Fredericia Musical Theater but this marks their most ambitious project to date. Mads Æbeløe also penned the script for Seebach the Musical, which is one of the best-selling productions in Danish theatre history of all time.
